The Best Pruners For Hand Mobility Issues – A Review

“When your business is growing trees and you have more than an acre of home gardens around your property, not being able to prune is a pretty serious issue.” – Grimm

The Gardener's Friends Pruners
Back in 2012, Paul Grimm, veteran nurseryman and gardener recognized that he was having increasing and debilitating hand weakness.  This was as a result of Arthritis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which combined, made the task of pruning very difficult.

After more than a year of extensive research Paul Grimm and his wife Nancy, co-owner of their business, Springvale Nurseries in Nova Scotia Canada, came up with a solution.  They located a manufacturer who would produce an ergonomically friendly pair of hand pruning shears that required much less effort to operate.

Nancy also suffers from hand mobility issues from the results of a fall and a poorly healed break in her wrist, and this was compounded with Carpal Tunnel disorder as well.

Step one of the processes was to acquire a prototype and test it in field conditions and that is exactly what the Grimms did.

As Paul said:  “The must be hundreds of thousands of possibly even millions of gardeners who share similar disabilities, yet desperatly want to continue with their gardening hobby and property care.”  He continued “Think of the number of people that can be helped if we could make gardening tools like this available everywhere to gardeners in need of a solution to their declining physical abilities, and yet wanting to continue gardening.”

By the time fall of 2013 rolled around the Grimms had decided to have these manufactured and offered to the general public because they were so thrilled with the results.

A plan soon fell into place to test the market with this amazing tool and the Grimms determined that the best venue for mass distribution was to create a listing on amazon.com for their newly minted product.

“We decided that this was the best possible way for us to get these out and make them available to as many people as possible,“ said Paul Grimm.  “By engaging the amazing distribution and market channels of Amazon we are able to focus our attentions on new product development and marketing.”

We compared our product to many other pruners on the market and determined that we had the best offering out there.

This is due in part to the unique ratcheting mechanism that allows the user to make difficult cuts in a series of stages.  This employs principles of mechanical advantage, otherwise called leverage.  “It may take a bit longer to complete a cut.“ Say Paul, “But it is so much easier on the hands.”

“I used to go to bed at night with severe pain and numbness from a day spent in the nursery, and now I can get a pain free good night’s rest”

Best Pruners featuresWe quickly want to simply list many of the other great benefits, some of which may be found on other brands but our garden pruners include all of these.  Take a look at the attached diagram below to see all the features and benefits.

As shown in the diagram, these include:

  • Neoprene hand grip for ease on the palm
  • The ratchet device as shown.
  • An extremely sharp SK-5 Steel blade that can be replaced if broken.
  • A looped handle for easy grip
  • A solid locking mechanism that can be opened with the right or left hand. (The tool is fully ambidextrous).
  • A small loop at the end to attach a lanyard.
  • A removable oiler sponge for cleaning the blade.

By the way, for new users we make the following recommendations.

  1. Take out the oiler sponge and store in a safe place for when you need it, you will lose it!
  2. To open and close the lock/latch you need to apply a bit of hand pressure and squeeze together slightly and then slide the black lock button back, and simple reverse to lock and store the garden shears when you have completed using them.

They may be a bit stiff at first but a small amount of light oil applied to the lock slider and the pivot point for the pruners can make opening and closing very easy.

We are intensely proud of this tool because it is now making an impact on gardeners of all ages and abilities.
